  • Abnormal uterine hemorrhage (AUB) is any bleeding from female genital tract which is abnormal. DUB is part of AUB.
  • It can occur in reproductive age (between puberty & menopause) or after reproductive age (post-menopausal bleeding).
  • Most common symptoms are heavy periods, frequent periods, frequent & heavy periods, irregular bleeding, bleeding after sexual contact etc.
  • Causes of AUB are uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, inflammation of genital organs (PID), inflammation of uterine lining (e.g. TB endometritis), malignancy of endometrium, polyp of endometrium or cervix, inflammation of cervix (cervicitis), malignancy of cervix, foreign body in genital tract, intrauterine contraceptive device, injury to genital tract, cysts & other lesions of ovaries, thyroid disorders, taking oral contraceptives irregularly etc.
  • Various options are available for diagnosis & management of AUB/DUB depending upon cause, such as, Oral hormonal or non-hormonal medications, curettage of endometrium, biopsy of cervix, colposcopy, removal of polyp or intrauterine device, removal of uterus by abdominal or vaginal route, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, intrauterine drug delivery systems (Mirena) etc.
